Handicapped Parking Spaces
Although specific requirements & regulations are different for each area, one that is relatively standard concerns handicap parking.
Most areas require that handicap locations occupy a specific number of spaces within a parking area. Many times, this is calculated based on the total number of spaces within the facility. For example, most commonly, it is required that there be at least 1 handicap location for every 8 standard locations within a parking area.
In addition, each of those locations must be properly marked with the universal symbol, as well as provide a clear and direct accessible route to the building.
This is certainly something that needs taken into consideration as you’re planning the parking area for your facility. Typically, new construction is required to make these accommodations. However older structures and parking
areas that have not had these previously, may be allowed a lower number of spaces, provided other conditions are met.
With rubber parking curbs, it’s easy to designate spaces for handicap access. Specifically manufactured for these types of uses, you can purchase a rubber curb that provides a blue background with a white stripe. Along with the proper signage and line painting, these make the designated spaces easy to see.
Consider using rubber curbs in your parking area to designate handicap locations.
