Installing Wheel Stops using Adhesive

Although using rebar spikes is the most conventional method of installing rubber wheel stops, there are other, more permanent options that can be considered.

When installing on concrete, permanent installations can also be done using epoxy adhesive. To install, the first step would be to make sure the surface is clean and free of debris and oil spots. If oil spots are present, the adhesive may not make a permanent bond with the surface, causing dangerous conditions later. So be sure to thoroughly inspect the surface before beginning.

Next, sand the bottom of the rubber stop with grade 40 sandpaper. This will slightly roughen the surface, and remove imperfections that may prevent adhesion. Using a belt sander or circular sander typically seems to work best for this stage.

Once the curb is sanded, you’ll want to use something similar to paint thinner to dust the surface. This will pull any shavings from the surface that might hinder the epoxy.

Now that both the surface and the curb are clean and free of debris, it’s time to begin the installation. Most prefer to mark the surface to be sure where each piece will be installed. This will help to align each curb with the curb in the space beside it, as well as to properly align the curb with the tires of vehicles to provide maximum results.

Once the markings are done, apply a continuous bead of adhesive to the sanded surface. This should be about 5/16” to 3/8” thick. It should be applied to any area that will come in contact with the concrete surface. Normally, one full 10 oz tube of adhesive is used per each 6′ parking curb.

Keep in mind that this is the only circumstance in which weather may affect the installation. The adhesive works best in temperatures above 41 degrees. Installing in any cooler temperatures could result in lack of adhesion, and potential dangers in the future.

Once the adhesive is applied, position the curb within the markings mentioned earlier. Press down on the curb to be sure that all surfaces of the curb come in contact with the concrete. It is also recommended that some type of load be applied on top of the curb to allow maximum contact between the two surfaces.

Once the curbs are installed, it’s best to allow 48 hours for the adhesive to dry. This will ensure that it has made a proper adhesion to the surface.

Of course, if you’re looking for a temporary, or removable option, you can always consider using our lag bolt & shield anchors instead. These offer a secure installation as well, with the option to remove the wheel stop if/when necessary.
