Rubber Traffic Control Products:
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Lately it seems that everyone has a higher appreciation for conserving our resources, and a lower tolerance for anything that doesn’t make every effort to do so.
It’s easy to find ways to conserve inside. Save work on computers instead of printing everything out; use solar power; lower the heating thermostat when nobody is there; etc. But it’s also important to think of ways to conserve outside as well. Our recycled rubber parking products are a great way to do that.
I’m sure you’ve heard the key words in conservation, right? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Let’s look at a few ways we can do each of those.
Reduce: These environmentally friendly speed bumps, parking curbs, and
speed humps are manufactured from rubber tires. Each 6′ speed bump uses about 5.1 tires to create. The parking curb, about 3.4 and each section of speed hump uses about 3.6 tires. That means that 1 speed bump location measuring 18′ long will reduce the number of tires in a landfill by more than 15 tires! Talk about reducing, right?
But that’s just the manufacturing side. What about transportation and installation? Well, they’re lightweight, so you can transport a large quantity in smaller vehicles. This uses less fuel and less energy than transporting concrete items.
Plus, one person can install any one of these products. So there’s no need to run heavy machinery. That reduces emissions and conserves fuel.
Reuse: When you intend to re-use something, it’s usually best if it’s made to do so. Asphalt and concrete curbs and bumps just aren’t designed for that. Try pulling up an asphalt speed bump and moving it somewhere else. It’s just not going to happen. Now, try pulling up a rubber speed bump to re-use it in another place. Of course, it’s a simple matter of removing the anchoring.
Ever tried to re-use a concrete parking curb? First of all, you need a small piece of machinery to lift it off the ground. And secondly, if you did manage to get it
picked up without it crumbling apart, what else can you possibly do with it? Now consider that a rubber parking curb can be pulled by just 1 person. And you can pull that parking curb off the parking lot, and install it on your dock as a bumper for trailers backing in to unload.
Recycle: Our products are made of 100% recycled tires. These tires are shredded into what is called “crumb rubber” and then mixed with a binding agent to produce the molded products. On average, 8 million tires are being recycled annually to create these and other molded rubber products.
As technology progresses, I’m sure we’ll find even better ways to conserve. Until then, installing rubber speed bumps, speed humps and parking curbs is a good way to get started.
