Installing Asphalt Speed Bumps
– A One Man Show?
When installing asphalt speed bumps in a parking facility, how many people do you think you would need? According to recent research, at least a 3-man crew is necessary to complete the job. Keep in mind that asphalt must be poured while it’s hot, and you have to be able to work quickly to get it placed and shaped before it sets.
Now, how many people are needed on a crew installing rubber speed bumps? Care to guess? It’s just one. Yes, that’s correct. A crew of just one man can transport the bumps, prep the surface, install the bumps and clean up the job. There’s no need for a large crew, no heavy machinery, and, you don’t even have to close the entire roadway.
Consider this; rubber speed bumps are just 51 lbs each. And considering they are pre-molded in a factory setting, each one is the same. So every bump is going to weigh 51 lbs. And each bump section that you use, is going to match up with the one next to it perfectly.
Next, consider how they are actually installed. With asphalt or concrete, once the material touches the surface, you’re pretty much stuck with that placement. So you’d better be sure, before you begin, that your layout is absolutely perfect. You’ll need to envision how the completed bump will appear, and where it needs to be long before you begin. Plus, the communication between the person forming the bump, and the person
pouring the material had better be right on. If not, you could end up with a bump that’s 18” instead of only 12”, costing time, and money for materials.
With rubber, you can actually lay the speed bump out in it’s actual installation location as it will be. No imagination necessary! Once they’re positioned the way they should be, you can begin drilling the anchor points for final installation. And, if they need moved later down the road, simply pull them up, fill the holes, and start in a new area. And that process can be done by one person as well!
Overall, it’s a one man show. Rubber speed bumps are easily transported, easily placed, quickly installed, and if necessary, removable, all by one individual. Is there any other material out there that can claim the same?
