Rubber Speed Bumps End Caps

Are They Necessary?

One of the most common questions we receive about our speed bumps is regarding the optional end caps.  Are they required?  Why would they be used?  Do they have to be on both ends?

End caps are offered as an optional addition to both speed bumps and speed humps.  While they are not a required element to make the bump function, we absolutely recommend that they be used for several reasons.

When installing speed bumps, each speed bump section is placed end to end to create varying lengths.  If end caps are not installed, the blunt ends of the bump are left exposed.  The addition of end caps will round and taper these blunt ends making the bump safer.

If the speed bump is being installed in an area with pedestrian traffic, covering the blunt end will reduce any trip hazards as Installing an end cap on a speed bump increases safety and aesteticspeople traverse over or around the bumps.  Individuals will be much less likely to trip over a rounded, tapered end than they are over a blunt exposed end.

This should be considered for any installation around schools, shopping facilities or business entrances.  Adding end caps increases the safety provided not only to those driving in the area, but also to those walking as well.

Another big reason end caps are recommended is longevity of the product.  When a speed bump is installed, drivers are inevitably going to try to avoid them by driving around.  Many times, as they try to avoid the bump they actually end up driving over the exposed end.  Because of the increased, uneven pressure on the end, over time this will start to deteriorate and break down that end.  This ultimately damages the speed bump, and will require early replacement.  Adding an end cap will create an even surface at the end of the bump.  So regardless of where the tires may travel over the bump, the pressure is equalized and damages are avoided.

End caps are not always a requirement.  If you have limited space and are installing against a curb for example, you may not have the option to use an end cap.  However when possible, it’s always recommended that an end cap be added.

End caps add safety, improve the aesthetics, and offer better protection all around.
