Compare Speed Hump to Speed Bump
While a rubber speed bump and a rubber speed hump are intended for very similar purposes, there are some quite significant differences as well. Let’s take a look at the similarities first, followed by the differences.
Similarities:
The intent of each product is very similar, and that is traffic calming. Both the bump and the hump are designed to slow traffic to help increase safety in a specific location.
- Both products are manufactured of rubber recycled from tires primarily taken out of US landfills. These tires are ground
into a substance called “crumb rubber” and then molded to create each section.
- Both the speed bump and speed hump have anchor points that are molded into the product ensuring anchoring will be easy and consistent when installed.
- End caps are also offered for both products. End caps help to ensure pedestrian safety by tapering the blunt ends that are otherwise left exposed. Adding end caps will also help protect the ends from breaking down after prolonged exposure to traffic.
- In addition, each bump and hump section will offer a yellow reflective tape baked into the surface enabling them to be easily visible in daylight and in low-light or nighttime situations.
Differences:
While both products are intended to calm traffic flow, the size of each product produces a very different degree of control.

- The speed bump, measures 6′ wide (measured across the road) and 12” long (the actual distance a vehicle will be in contact with the bump) with a height of 2.25”. This makes the speed bump a rather aggressive device and should slow traffic to about 5 mph. Most times, a vehicle will almost come to a stop to cross over them.
- The speed hump, on the other hand offers a much smoother transition. These are assembled in pieces measuring 19.5” wide and 35.5” long with a height of just 2.1”. Because the hump is larger, vehicles tend to maintain movement, but typically slow to around 15 mph.
- As mentioned, both items offer end caps to protect the blunt ends that would otherwise be left to the elements. However

the end caps themselves are different. The speed bump offers a rather short, rounded & tapered end cap, while the speed hump offers a large, square end cap that is very similar to the interior sections.
- While both also offer reflective tape, the pattern used is quite different. The speed bump offers a diagonal strip. However the speed hump shows small squares parallel with the road to create a sort of checkerboard pattern.
Knowing the similarities and the differences in each product is important when selecting which item is right for you. It’s always best to take a step back and consider the big picture when planning traffic control. Doing so will help to give you a clear picture of the circumstances, coupled with knowing the details of the product will help you to select the best product and will ensure their effectiveness for years and years to come.
